General ability test paper for ESE examinations is a common paper for all branches. it consists of two sections
SECTION I ENGLISH
SECTION II GENERAL STUDIES
This whole paper is of 200 marks i.e. 20 percent of total marks in written examination. I have seen that most of the candidates ignore this paper and is one the prime reason for their not getting selected. A good candidate can easily score around 130-150 marks in this paper. All you need is systematic study and devote at least half an hour daily for GS and ENGLISH.
First step in preparing for GAT paper is to know what is asked???
I would analyse 2012,2013, 2014 and 2015 paper for you so that you can understand the underlying trend and prepare accordingly.
In this blog i will analyse the general studies section.
POLITY
About 5-10 questions every year are asked from this section
these are mostly very simple questions and check your knowledge about the know how of constitution and your awareness of the recent activities
in 2014 there were 10 questions from polity while 2012. 2013 and 2015 there were only 5-6 questions.
questions from previous years may be repeated.
topics mainly covered-
1. Parliament and parliamentary procedures with essentially one question regarding to rajyasabha asked every year for last 4 years.
2. President and governor
3. Appointment of supreme court and high court judges
4. elections for different posts
5. appointment procedure for different posts
HISTORY
History can be the most predictable part of ESE.
around 3 to 5 questions are asked and essentially are from modern history only
topics mainly covered are
1. GOI act 1935, 1919 and 1909
2. different movements specially swadeshi and boycott movement 1905, CDM 1930 and non cooperation movement 1919.
3. important congress sessions
4. apart from this facts about jain and bauddha dharma can be asked
GEOGRAPHY
geography forms a very important part as around 15 questions each year are asked.
if you take a look at last 4 years paper of geography then you will find that there are some topics from which questions have essentially been asked every year and they must be studied.
topics are
1. Boundaries between different states and international border and coastline (2 questions)
2. UNESCO world heritage sites, biospheres, national parks and ramsar sites along with important animals found (3-5 questions)
3. Important straits and ocean currents (2 questions)
4. DAMS (1-2 questions)
5. National highways and waterways (1 question every year)
6. Rivers of India (at least 1 question)
there have been questions regarding forests, census, rainfall and clouds etc which have been very easy and can be found in any general knowledge book
BIOLOGY AND ECOLOGY
this is again a very important topic with 10-20 questions asked but topics from which questions have been asked remain mostly same. Topics are
1. Food chain and evolution sequence (1 question)
2. cells (plants and animals)
3. Biodiversity
4. endangered species in india
5. digestion system, blood circulation system and respiratory system
6. diseases and their causes
7. green house gases and global warming
8. edible parts of different plants
CURRENT
among current affair questions special emphasis should be given to below topics as questions are again very predictable
if we analyse last 4 years paper then there are few topics from which questions are always asked
1. IMF and World bank (1 ques)
2. International organisations of which India is a part (1 ques)
3. Indian space program (1 question)
4. Indian Defence and Indian missile program
5. different boards related to agriculture and their headquarters
6. recent books and awards
7. geographical location of recently very famous countries
8. latest technologies which have their effect on international markets or some awards have been given related to them
this a simple analysis of last 4 year questions of GS and I think with smart study one can easily get around 70-75 marks in this part of ESE
In my next blog I will analyse and english paper and after that daily questions and solutions will be provided for effective preparation of ESE GAT paper.
